Rolo Tomassi: Cosmology
22/07/10 || sly
Rolo Tomassi is a group of young English kiddies who are beginning to taste the glory of growing fame with their second full-length album “Cosmology”.
While it’s not something I would own or listen to of my own accord, it is certainly not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. These kids are pretty decent with their instruments, and the vocals are not completely annoying (yes, a little bit). They seem to try to incorporate hardcore and punk with some jazzy bits, and a layer of artsy fartsy shit. Hey, that’s what the kids want these days, right? And this album is definitely made by kids for kids. If I were 15 and had never really discovered much for music, and I heard these guys (and gal), I would probably really dig it. But I am not 15 and I don’t care for emo-core shit.
The music itself basically consists of heavy guitars, intentionally random pounding of the keyboard, and indecipherable growls with cutesy girl vocals soaring o’er the top. The songs range from teenage angst-inspired chaotic discordance to a slow subdued melodiousness.
I could easily see them going somewhere with this. But I think that somewhere is likely to be Hot Topic. I see snug-fitting Rolo Tomassi t-shirts paired with tight jeans and pink studded belts in their future. They’re on the same label as The Get Up Kids and Cancer Bats, if that gives you some idea…
After listening to it for the sake of this review, I doubt I’ll ever pick it up again. Actually, I know I won’t. But regardless of my personal opinion, I hope that with age Rolo perfects their individual sound rather than selling out altogether to the ignominious world that is emo-core.
